In 2024, will the Browns be able to move past the troubled Watson?
The 2023 NFL season has only begun, but already 31 other teams need to come up with a strategy to unseat the Kansas City Chiefs and put an end to their dynasty in 2024. Watson was traded for Daniel Jones.
Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum suggested a possible trade for Watson during an appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Friday. In exchange, Cleveland would receive a new starting quarterback on a somewhat better contract, and the New York Giants would be able to start over with a more seasoned signal-caller.
Tannenbaum’s suggested trade would send Daniel Jones to the Giants for Watson and a second-round draft pick; both quarterbacks would have endured injury-plagued 2023 seasons. Before the season started, Jones inked a four-year, $160 million contract extension. However, he was unable to build on his successful 2022 campaign, as a damaged knee ligament ended his season after six starts. Due to a shoulder issue that ultimately concluded in November, Watson only participated in six games as well. The Browns would basically move off of Watson’s fully-guaranteed contract to take a one-year gamble on the former top-10 pick because Jones’ contract includes a potential “out” after the next season. On paper, at least, a quarterback with three Pro Bowl selections would provide the much-needed enthusiasm the Giants are lacking after a terrible 2023 campaign.
