Premier League teams have ‘targeted’ Bruno Guimaraes, a midfielder for Newcastle United, according to Eddie Howe.
The previous time Newcastle United played at Nottingham Forest, Bruno Guimaraes was once again among the goals.
The Brazilian had only scored once this season coming into the game, but he struck twice in a 3-2 victory at the City Ground. Played in a more advanced midfield position, Guimaraes first volleyed in Kieran Trippier’s cross before finishing well outside the box to score the game’s winning goal in the second half. With 14 games left, Newcastle’s victory moved them up to seventh place in the Premier League standings. Eddie Howe and his team have faced many more challenges this season than they faced the previous one, when they finished fourth and advanced to the Carabao Cup final.Furthermore, Howe thinks that Guimaraes’ attributes and value to Newcastle make him a target for rival teams.
“I think, like all players this season, he’s had moments where he’s been the difference maker for us and there have been moments when games have been more difficult,” said Howe. Teams are undoubtedly trying to stop him now, which is part of the reason we relocated him and attempted something different.
“He’s got real quality but underneath it all he is a humble lovely person as well and those two things, the player and the person, makes him a special man for us.”Newcastle’s next match comes on Saturday at St James’ Park against AFC Bournemouth, with a 3pm kickoff. Guimaraes, who struggled with illness last week, is expected to start this game.
However, the Brazilian is treading carefully when it comes to discipline and is only one yellow card away from a two-match suspension in the Premier League.
