RJ Hampton has been waived by the Heat to provide space for Alondes Williams.
The Miami Heat are not yet content with their roster, even if they did not take many action at the trade deadline to add to their roster after signing Terry Rozier. They added someone to the roster on Friday, one day after the deadline, so that much is evident.
The Heat announced in a statement that they had signed Alondes Williams to a two-way deal. Williams has been playing for the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the team’s G League affiliate. He has averaged 20.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 37.3 percent from three-point range and 49.9 percent from the field. The 24-year-old shooting guard has even been chosen to play for the G League squad in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge due to his outstanding play.
But the Heat are dismissing former Denver Nuggets first-round pick and once-promising NBL prospect RJ Hampton to make place for Williams’ deal. In the offseason, the 24-year-old inked a two-way contract with Miami. Regretfully, he had trouble producing strong results while on the official roster and in the G League.
Hampton only managed 1.3 points and 1.0 assists in eight games—two of which he started—during his 9.5 minutes per game with the Heat. He made 12.5 percent of long-range shots and 28.6 percent of field goals.
Alondes Williams now has the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities at the NBA level. As expected, the Heat will be hopeful that, if only briefly, his domination in the G League can carry over to the professional ranks.
