Former head coach and Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim made some really significant remarks regarding the Syracuse basketball 2022 recruiting class in October of 2021.
Boeheim’s remarks were taken with a grain of salt, but the Orange’s 2022 cycle did have a lot of potential. Boeheim stated that the ‘Cuse had five commitments in this class at the time of his remarks.
Point guard Judah Mintz committed to Syracuse basketball the next spring, in late March 2022, giving this Orange cycle six players and a national ranking that lingered around No. 20 overall, per several recruiting agencies.
That ‘Cuse 2022 class has essentially vanished as of right now. With the proliferation of the transfer portal, it’s a sign of the times in college basketball. It’s also a tremendous disappointment, in my honest view.
Numerous players from Syracuse basketball have visited the portal.
The Orange finished the 2023–24 season with a 20–12 record overall last month. Syracuse basketball achieved 20 wins in the regular season for the first time in ten years under first-year head coach Adrian Autry, but the team still missed the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year.
On Monday, March 18, the transfer portal went live. This 45-day window will remain available. According to media reports and commentators, at least five players on the Orange’s 2023–24 roster have either entered the portal or intend to do so.
The Syracuse basketball players in question are sophomore Benny Williams, a forward who was kicked out of the program in early February, sophomore guard/wing Quadir Copeland, sophomore center Peter Carey, and sophomore big man Maliq Brown.
