Welcome to the intersection of “here we go again,” “brave new world,” and our live-updated Washington Commanders 2024 offseason and free agency tracker.
The NFL’s legal tampering period opens on Monday at noon ET, and the league season officially begins on Wednesday, setting off the first offseason of the new administration. The Commanders have a lot of roster openings and a salary cap space of almost $80 million (league high), but how aggressive will they be?

Following four seasons with the Falcons, the five-year veteran played with the Eagles in 2023. In 2022, Zaccheaus recorded a career-high 40 receptions for 533 yards and 13 starts. However, in just 17 games (one start) with Philadelphia, the 5-foot-8 target managed just 10 grabs (20 targets) for 164 yards and two touchdowns.
Since Curtis Samuel departed for Buffalo during the free agent market, Washington has not added a wide receiver this summer.
Lucas’s re-signing by Washington is hardly shocking. Everyone does get a chance to breathe out after the transfer.
Lucas and the league reached an agreement on a one-year contract worth up to $4 million. At the moment, the front-runner to start on the left side is a dependable swing tackle from former head coach Ron Rivera’s four seasons in that position. The fact that Lucas, who turns 33 in July, doesn’t even have a clear backup plan illustrates how important he is to the team.
Given that Washington has six selections among the top 100 picks, the Commanders will probably take a shot at the position in the NFL Draft in April. Lucas would enable the coaches to gradually introduce a young tackle into the lineup, much like having veteran Marcus Mariota available for a rookie quarterback chosen with the second overall pick.
