Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray recently praised teammate Nikola Jokic, calling him the league’s finest player, in an interview with NBA reporter Melissa Rohlin of Fox Sports. Murray acknowledged his lofty aspirations to become the greatest player of all time, but he also said modestly that he hopes to finish right behind Jokic.

“I also want to be the best. Being the greatest player ever is my goal. It goes without saying that you will never reach the top if you don’t shoot high. As of right moment, I believe Jokic to be the best player. And I aim to come in right behind.”

Murray is still committed to the success of the team, especially in the Nuggets’ quest for back-to-back titles, despite his individual aspirations. Following their 2023 NBA championship victory over the Miami Heat, Murray, Jokic, and the Nuggets hope to emulate the accomplishments of the Golden State Warriors of 2017–18. Jokic won the Finals MVP award in the last championship thanks to his outstanding play; Murray is hoping to receive the same honor this coming season.

Murray stressed the importance of winning the MVP of the Finals and how it differs from individual awards such as being selected as an All-Star. He thinks that a player’s genuine worth and resiliency are demonstrated when they perform well on a regular basis during the playoffs, when teams plan to counteract their opponents’ advantages. Murray’s desire to perform well on the biggest platform is a reflection of his desire to improve and help the Nuggets win.
