The Dallas Cowboys have signed a running back to begin the second week of free agency.
Many have become enraged with the Dallas Cowboys since the start of free agency due to their lack of noteworthy outside additions. As the second week of talks approaches, Dallas will have to sift through the remaining big names as there aren’t many left to add.
On Monday, there weren’t many signings, but the ‘Boys still managed to participate.Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle has agreed to a new contract with the team, according to his agency, SportsTrust Advisors. Although he started the season trailing both rookie Deuce Vaugh and Tony Pollard, Dowdle’s struggles in the first five games allowed him to assume a more significant role. The South Carolina product rose to RB2, and he never let up, setting career highs in carries (89), yards (361), and touchdowns (2) on the ground. In addition, he added another 17 receptions, 144 yards, and two touchdowns via the air. Although Dowdle’s 4.1 yards per carry was unremarkable, he is a physical runner who can make plays in short yardage situations. In Week 10, he showed even more potential, scoring 79 points.
With Vaughn and the starting running back Malik Davis still around, Dowdle is back in the Cowboys’ backfield. He may be the starting back at this point.
Dallas is probably going to address the position in the draft because the organization has refused to pay Pollard or even lower-tier running backs like Devin Singletary this offseason. Although the class of this year isn’t as strong as the one from last year, local talent and Texas Longhorns standout Jonathan Brooks, who is expected to be selected in the second round, leads Jerry Jones’ team’s potential alternatives.
Given his brutal running style, Dowdle is still a valuable addition to the team even if Dallas decides to sign another veteran or uses a first-round pick on an RB.
