Sherrone Moore, the next coach of the Michigan football team, will have to replace one more position during an offseason marred by coaching turmoil.

Coach Mike Hart will not be rejoining the Wolverines for the upcoming season, according to a report published on Friday by Angelique Chengelis of The Detroit News. Hart helped Michigan’s run game become one of the best in the country during his three seasons as running backs coach and his final two as run-game coordinator.

Hassan Haskins, a running back, had an outstanding season in 2021 under Hart’s coaching. Breaking a Michigan record, Haskins ran for 20 touchdowns, including five in the Wolverines’ first victory over rival Ohio State in ten years. Along with his 1,327 yards of rushing, Haskins was selected to the first team of the Big Ten.

Under Hart’s guidance, Blake Corum flourished in 2022 and 2023. With 1,245 yards of rushing in 2023, Corum eclipsed the mark that Haskins had set with 27 touchdowns, and he also set a new program record with 58 career touchdowns. Along the way, he even overtook Hart on the touchdown leaderboards.

Hart not only made history with the Wolverines, but he also helped them reach new heights with their run game. When Hart put on the headset during the second half of the Wolverines’ game against UNLV, he became the first Black head coach in Michigan football history. Moore, who is currently the first Black head coach on a full-time basis, shortly followed.

And Moore now needs to work extra hard to cover one more hole before spring practices start in only ten days. Hart not only had noticeable outcomes on the field, but his teammates also had nothing but positive things to say about him. It won’t be simple to replace him, and the short notice will make it worse.

However, Moore has had to locate high-caliber replacements for the whole offseason.
