Maybe the Washington Commanders can find a trading partner who is willing to offer Sam Howell a chance at starting if they don’t want to.
Last season, the Washington Commanders made a risky decision by benching second-year quarterback Sam Howell as their starting quarterback just one season after choosing him in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Howell had a lot of promise early on, but things fell apart after he tried to lead the Commanders’ offense against a run of disappointing defensive efforts. This resulted in just four wins, the dismissal of coach Ron Rivera, and general speculation that the team will look to replace quarterback Sam Howell in 2024. Should that happen, Howell will either be limited to a backup role or have to convince Washington that he’s superior to the team’s projected No. 2 overall pick.
Alternatively, as a third option, he could be able to compete for a position elsewhere, such as with Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton.
“The Russell Wilson fiasco has left Denver in a difficult situation,” The Athletic states in their quarterback carousel predictions. “The Broncos are not very appealing to a top free agent like Kirk Cousins, and they have little salary flexibility. The fact that they don’t hold a second-round pick and that they are selecting 12th puts them just outside the reach of the best quarterback prospects, barring a deal involving J.J. McCarthy or a strong affinity for Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr.
There was talk in Indianapolis that they would be interested in acquiring a young quarterback through trade. Without the chaos in Washington, Howell (3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions in 2023) would be a compelling target. The solution should be a third- or fourth-round selection.”
The Commanders would have made money on their original investment just three years ago if they were to receive a third or fourth round pick from the Broncos. This pick may be utilized to help assemble the roster that will surround the new quarterback.
