These three players need to be extended by the Cleveland Browns in order to free up contract space for the upcoming offseason.
The Cleveland Browns learned on Friday that their cap space situation was not as dire as everyone had assumed. When the NFL announced that the salary ceiling had been raised to $255.4 million, they found themselves in a far better position. Even if they’re still in the thick of things, it feels much more controllable now, and should they manage to extend and reorganize a few important players, they’ll also be able to make more moves.
They need to reorganize Deshaun Watson as their first player, which may save them almost $33 million. A few players whose contracts are about to expire should also be considered for extensions.
Even though the total cost would increase, they could spread out the deals over the ensuing years, providing them with even more respite. Having said that, these three players require an immediate extension.
3. Wide Receiver Amari Cooper
With a $23.77 million cap cost, Amari Cooper is the second player on the squad going into his final year of contract. Cooper, who joined the organization in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys in 2022, made history this season. In addition to setting a new record for receiving yards in a single game (265), he became the first player in Browns history to earn 1,000 yards receiving in consecutive seasons.
In 32 games while wearing a uniform in Cleveland, Cooper has 150 receptions for 2,410 yards and 14 touchdowns. The fact that he has achieved these stats over the previous two years despite a quarterback rotation is even more remarkable.
