Reid spent 10 of his 13 years in the NBA with the Rockets
The former NBA player Robert Reid passed away at the age of 68, the Houston Rockets confirmed Tuesday afternoon. Reid played in the NBA for 13 years, 10 of those years being spent with the Rockets. Reid attended St. Mary’s University for four years as a collegiate player before being selected by Houston in the second round of the 1977 draft.
Reid announced his retirement from the NBA after his first five seasons for religious reasons, but he later returned to the Rockets and played eight more seasons in the NBA after taking a year off to focus further on his Pentecostal faith. He was an essential component of the Rockets’ numerous postseason runs while he was a member of the team.
Following Reid’s demise, Rockets owner Tillman Fertitta issued the following statement:
. Reid played a significant role in the Rockets’ unexpected run to the NBA Finals that season, despite finishing with a 40–42 record, before losing to the Boston Celtics.
After defeating Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the Lakers in the Western Conference finals of the 1985–86 season, Reid, Hakeem Olajuwon, and the Rockets found themselves in the NBA Finals once more three years later. They lost their second NBA Finals matchup with the Celtics.
