‘Moyes Out’ signs were seen following West Ham’s recent loss to Nottingham Forest.
After losing their most recent match to Nottingham Forest, West Ham has now lost three straight games. Following the match, supporters held signs reading “Moores Out” all over the stadium.
After fighting for Europa League slots, the Hammers have fallen to ninth place in the league. The board is apparently looking for a replacement for the 60-year-old Scotsman, who is in his second stint as manager of the London Stadium team.
Although the club is not prepared to make any snap judgments on Moyes’ future, it is clear that his position is in jeopardy because there are supposedly other applicants vying for it. The Mail Online reports that the three people on the list of possible replacements are former Chelsea manager Graham Potter, former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui, and former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.
Admired too, was Oliver Glasner, the former Eintracht Frankfurt manager who took over as Crystal Palace manager yesterday after Roy Hodgson resigned. Although Potter has turned down numerous opportunities in the year since leaving Chelsea, it is unclear if any of the aforementioned managers would be eager to take on a position.
The most recent name on the list is Lopetegui, a Spaniard who hasn’t had a job since leaving Wolves in 2023. In the past, he has overseen multiple junior teams in Spain in addition to the senior team from 2016 to 2018. In addition, the former goalkeeper managed Port, Real Madrid, and Sevilla throughout his managerial tenure. He helped Real Madrid and Sevilla go to the UEFA Super Cup finals, win the 2020 UEFA Europa League, and lead the Spain U19 and U21 squads to the UEFA Euros championships in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
After moving to the Premier League in 2022, the former Spanish manager quickly made history at Wolves by being the first manager to win his first game in the top division since 1978. But in August 2023, he departed due to the club’s financial predicament.
Moyes’s current Irons contract expires this summer, and although he has been in talks to negotiate a new contract because of the season’s encouraging start, his desire to rekindle those discussions and guarantee his future has diminished in light of his recent success.
When the team was facing relegation fears this time last year, the former Manchester United manager was in a similar situation. However, the club’s victory in the Europa Conference League guaranteed he would play out the remaining year of his contract.
Brazilian star Lucas Paqueta’s absence from the Irons has coincided with their current winning streak. However, with Paqueta due to return in the next two weeks, any managerial decisions may be evaluated after he recovers from his calf injury.
Monday, February 26th, marks West Ham’s next match at the London Stadium. Brentford will travel from the west side of the city to play the Irons in what might be a pivotal ninety minutes for the Scottish manager.
