This decision has nothing to do with the ongoing Michigan sign-stealing inquiry. The NCAA and Michigan, together with five current or former football program staff members, have reached a consensus regarding recruiting breaches and “coaching activities by noncoaching staff members that occurred within the football program, and the appropriate penalties for those violations.”
According to the NCAA announcement, Michigan will be placed on three-year probation, fined, and have its recruiting options restricted. The coaches that were penalized will also be subject to one-year show-cause orders. The NCAA said in a notice of allegations to Michigan in January that the Wolverines met with two recruits in violation of the COVID-19 dead period. Other infractions, all categorized as Level II, include sending a recruit text message after the contact period has passed, having coaches watch athletes work out over Zoom, and using analysts to coach players in excess of what the NCAA allows for on-field coaches.
