a previous Big 12 head coach. A Southern Conference assistant coach. One West Coast Conference assistant coach. Three well-known Florida Atlantic faces.

Assistant coaches Mike Boynton Jr., Justin Joyner, and Akeem Miskdeen are among the six hires that the program announced on Thursday, marking the official appointment of the first members of Michigan basketball coach Dusty May’s coaching staff.

Dusty May's first coaching staff at Michigan is complete.

Three employees who worked with May at FAU, Kyle Church, Drew Williamson, and Brandon Gilbert, complete the new hires who will try to restore a program that is coming off a historically poor campaign.

“I stressed how crucial it is to put together a group of exceptional educators who are excellent communicators and teachers. We’ve accomplished that target, which I’m glad to say,” May said in a statement.

Even though I knew a few of our coaches beforehand, I was very careful to choose the top applicants for the remaining spots. This group has a wealth of basketball experience, a solid work ethic, and outstanding character traits. Their unshakeable dedication to achievement has already been demonstrated, and I’m really impressed.”

Boynton, who has over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience and has been Oklahoma State’s head coach for the last seven years, is the first of the basketball brains to combine.

Boynton guided the Cowboys to a 119-109 record and 24 victories over teams in the national rankings during his time at OSU—the third-most in program history. In 2021, he participated in one NCAA Tournament trip, leading a team captained by No. 1 draft pick and top recruit Cade Cunningham.

Boynton will try to assist in forging a strong defensive identity with the Wolverines. From 2020 to 23 he coached Oklahoma State teams that were ranked No. 17, No. 4, and No. 12 in the country in KenPom.com’s defensive efficiency rankings.
