One of the most illustrious schools in women’s college basketball is looking to a rising coaching star in an attempt to regain its former grandeur.
Kim Caldwell, the coach of Marshall, will take over as Tennessee’s next head coach, the Volunteers said in a press release on Sunday afternoon.
Finding a dynamic head coach capable of elevating our women’s basketball program back to national prominence has been our goal from the start. Danny White, the athletic director of the Volunteers, stated in a statement that Kim Caldwell is the perfect person to lead us.
On the hardwood, Tennessee is deep in a long-lasting funk by its high standards. Since winning the national championship in 2008 with the legendary Pat Summitt as head coach, the Volunteers have not made it to the Final Four.
In light of this, Tennessee fired coach Kellie Harper on April 1; Harper had previously played for Summitt.
Caldwell guided the Thundering Herd to a 26-7 record and a sweep of the conference regular season and tournament titles in her lone season in charge of the team.
