Everybody’s journey to the University of Oklahoma is unique. While some people enter through the transfer link, others arrive directly out of college.

Kelly Maxwell ended up playing for the Sooners in the latter scenario.

Maxwell played for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, an in-state rival of the Sooners, for five seasons. Among many other honors, she was selected to the USA Softball Women’s National Team in 2022 and 2023. She was also named to the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Year, the 2023 NFCA Second Team All-American, the 2023 All-Big 12 First Team, and the 2022 NFCA Unanimous First Team All-American.

During her five years at Oklahoma State, Maxwell stated in an interview with KREF in Norman, Oklahoma was always her dream school.

Actually, Maxwell admitted, “I was an OU fan from a young age.” This was actually my ideal school—everyone in my dad’s family attended. I had always enjoyed watching Adrian Peterson and OU football. My coach at the time, who was an OU supporter, would say, “Hey, why don’t you wear 28, it’s Adrian Peterson’s number and it’s just one above 27?” if 27 was taken (on her trip ball team). I said, “Yes, without a doubt.” That kind of stuck after that, and I’ve been 28 ever since. That is just one more illustration of how every person’s journey to Oklahoma is unique. Maxwell is currently assisting her “dream school” in winning another national championship. Previously, she was a feared pitcher for the opposing school.
