Paul Hegarty believes Derry City will win tonight’s match against Galway United because the players are improving with every game.
Derry City had two weeks to reflect on their season’s opening loss, which occurred at Dalymount Park against Bohemians. However, they now have the opportunity to move past it, as their next game is against Galway United tonight, and their next journey is to Shelbourne on Easter Monday.
Hegarty is optimistic that the club can recover swiftly despite acknowledging that a few players are still dealing with injuries before the game.
Players will make errors, even at the best level, he noted. We have, in my opinion, the best group of players in the league right now. Although individuals are fallible, they are still decent people. These players have a strong mentality. We’ll be prepared for that come Friday night, I’m sure of it.
Bohemians was an odd kind of contest. We dominated the opening 29 minutes and had several opportunities to close the gap on them before we made a mistake and lost 1-0. I felt like we responded to that really nicely. And I thought we really pressed the situation when we brought on the substitutes.
“In the last third, we lacked clinical enough play, and then
Galway United has not won a single game in their last three games and is coming to the Brandywell with just one point. Despite this, they are ranked sixth, and Hegarty thinks their strength is far greater than what the most recent data indicates.
“We had two weeks to prepare for this, so we’ve watched every one of their matches and we’ve looked at them over and over again,” he said. It would not have been possible to claim that Galway’s victory in Shelbourne was a heist or anything similar. It was not possible for you to say that they deserved less. I doubt anyone would have argued that they didn’t deserve to win if they had defeated Shamrock Rovers at home by a point.
