The Tennessee Vols made a crucial choice earlier in the offseason that seems to be going according to plan.
Gerald Mincey, the starting right tackle for the Vols, left via the NCAA transfer site in January. Mincey spent the previous two seasons in Knoxville before transferring to Kentucky. He started six games for Tennessee last season.
In lieu of Mincey, Tennessee used the portal to get Lance Heard, a former five-star recruit who is now a transfer offensive tackle from LSU.
The Vols decided to transfer John Campbell from left tackle to right tackle after signing Heard.
After the 2022 season, Campbell moved to Tennessee from Miami. The previous season, he started nine games at left tackle for the Vols.
There’s always a chance that a guy moving up the offensive line won’t be successful.
The same holds true for the addition of a transfer player to a program. Sometimes transfers just aren’t a good fit and don’t work out because of how little time programs have to get to know a player in the gateway.
Luckily for the Vols, Heard at left tackle and Campbell at right tackle seem to be a good combination.
Campbell told reporters on Monday that he just wants to do everything in his power to help the team win and that the switch to right tackle is going “smooth.”
Regarding Heard, Glen Elarbee, the offensive line coach for the Vols, told reporters that he believes the former LSU offensive lineman is “right on schedule” and adjusting quite well.
