The hiring of a new head coach for the Michigan basketball team was always going to be influenced by the NCAA tournament. The majority of the most qualified applicants had teams participating in the event, but on Thursday and Friday, they began withdrawing like flies.
On Friday, Dusty May became the most recent victim of elimination. After his team let Northwestern pull away with a late lead, he may now listen to pitches from West Virginia, Louisville, and Michigan basketball. There has been talk of interest in certain schools.
Although May appears to be a favorite, Louisville might be a better fit for him. Drake’s Darian DeVries also makes a great deal of sense. Additionally, Niko Medved of Colorado State has a strong case to be made.
The clubs led by each of the three coaches were eliminated from the NCAA tournament’s opening round. Another rising name is South Florida’s Amir Abdur-Rahim. In one way or another, we should see some movement shortly as his team has also been released from the NIT.
Although every Michigan fan should hope for the opposite, the John Calipari to Michigan basketball rumors may begin to gain traction. Calipari cannot coach his way out of a paper bag without elite players.
Darian DeVries, the head coach of Drake, is my personal favorite. He has accumulated many 20-win seasons. In four of his six seasons with the Bulldogs, they have either made the NCAA tournament or won a conference championship. He has never lost fewer than twenty games.
Additionally, a common attraction appears. Although I would also be content with May, I like that DeVries is a member of the Dana Altman coaching tree. While there isn’t a clear-cut winner, I hope Michigan basketball shares my sentiments. However, I’m hoping the Wolverines move swiftly and begin assembling a team for the 2024–25 campaign.
