On July 20, Manchester United and Rangers will square off in a preseason game at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in Edinburgh for the first time in more than ten years.
The legendary teams from the Premier League and Scottish Premiership haven’t squared off since 2010 at Ibrox, when United won 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League group stage thanks to a late penalty kick by Wayne Rooney.
The match is United’s second summer visit to Murrayfield following our 1-0 victory over Lyon of French Ligue 1 in July of last year in front of 50,000 spectators at the historic home of Scottish rugby.
The Reds’ penultimate game before departing for their summer tour of the United States, which begins in Los Angeles a few days later, is scheduled for 16:00 BST on Saturday in Edinburgh.
Rangers legend and former Scotland international Lee McCulloch, along with Manchester United legend and former England international Wes Brown, announced the match at a ceremony in Edinburgh today (Wednesday).
Both players expressed their excitement for the match, having been in the squad during United’s previous meeting with Rangers.
“One of those can’t-miss occasions for any football fan is two of the biggest clubs in British football coming together in the Scottish capital,” stated Wes Brown. The support from the fans was amazing when United played Olympique Lyonnais last year, and I have no doubt that the atmosphere this year will be even better thanks to the Rangers supporters.”
“I remember it like it was yesterday,” remarked Lee McCulloch of his 2010 United debut. Even though the outcome wasn’t what we had hoped for, it was still a fantastic event that showed how strong both sides were as dominant forces in their own countries.
Manchester United continues to be one of the best teams in the world of football, while Rangers is back in the race for the top spot in the Scottish Premiership. The home of Scottish rugby, Scottish Gas Murrayfield, is among the most spectacular sports arenas in the world, so it makes sense that such an exciting match would take place there.
