The Premier League confirmed that Nottingham Forest will receive a four-point deduction for breaking the competition’s profitability and sustainability criteria (PSR), which will force them to fall into the relegation zone. After Everton, they are now the second Premier League team this season to be deducted from PSR. Last Saturday, Forest and Luton Town, the team they will now slide beneath, tied 1-1.As a result of their violation of the Premier League’s sustainability and profitability regulations, Nottingham Forest has lost four points (PSR).
The club will drop from 25 points to 21 as a result of the deduction, moving them one point behind Luton Town and into the relegation zone in 18th position.
A statement issued by the Premier League read: “An independent commission has applied an immediate four-point deduction to Nottingham Forest FC for a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) for the period ending season 2022/23.”On January 15, Nottingham Forest admitted that it had over the applicable PSR threshold of £61 million by £34.5 million. As a result, the club was referred to an independent commission. Due to the club’s two seasons in the EFL Championship during the assessment period, the threshold was less than £105 million.

“The club had the chance to present a number of mitigating considerations during a two-day hearing this month, during which the independent commission decided on the sentence. The committee concluded that during the entire process, the club had shown “extraordinary cooperation” in its interactions with the Premier League.
Everton was given a 10-point penalty for PSR back in November, making Forest the second team in the Premier League this season to suffer a point reduction. In February, that was lowered to six points following the Toffees’ appeal.
Forest expressed their “extreme disappointment with the decision” in a statement.
“We were extremely dismayed by the tone and content of the Premier League’s submissions before the commission,” Forest stated.
“After months of engagement with the Premier League, and exceptional cooperation throughout, this was unexpected and has harmed the trust and confidence we had in the Premier League.”The Premier League’s request for an eight-point fine as a starting point was completely out of proportion to the nine points that their own rules stipulate for insolvency.
“We believe that the high levels of cooperation the club has shown during this process, and which are confirmed and recorded in the commission’s decision, were not reciprocated by the Premier League.
On Saturday, Forest had a chance to clinch a crucial victory over Luton at Kenilworth Road, but they were pushed back in the closing stages of their 1-1 draw.
The next time Forest plays in the league is on March 30 at the City Ground against Crystal Palace.
