The government has revealed plans to spend over £100 million to strengthen the north west’s economy.

£50 million will be given to the Derry and Strabane district area city deal in order to foster innovation and expand the region’s digital industry.

An additional £55 million has been designated for the region’s first-ever Inclusive Future Fund in the United Kingdom.

Its goal is to provide funding for initiatives that address poverty, build young people’s skill sets, and create jobs.

The new fund “recognises the unique circumstances facing the region and will help create new opportunities for the whole of the community, especially for young people,” according to Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley.

The investment package at £105 million, according to her, “is a major boost to the economic potential of the region”.

Ms. Bradley stated that it “will help strengthen the foundations for greater prosperity and a stronger, more united society” .

Ulster University may locate a new medical school on the riverfront as a result of the investment.

The government of Northern Ireland, along with additional funds from project partners and the private sector, are expected to augment the cash, according to the Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The local government projects that over £300 million will be invested overall.

“This enormously significant announcement for the Derry and Strabane District today will go some considerable way in addressing the long-standing obstacles to economic development that this city region and its people face,” stated John Boyle, the mayor of Derry and Strabane.

“It is good news and is the result of an enormous amount of work and sustained effort invested by council and the city and regional partners to develop, deliver and negotiate on the bid.”

A city deal—what is it?

Localities with city deal status have additional authority to promote job development and economic growth.

The construction of a historic riverfront university medical education and innovation hub is one of the initiatives included in the city contract.

It is anticipated to result in the creation of 200 new research positions and a 2,000 increase in Ulster University’s population in the city.

The Derry city deal proposal calls for expanding City of Derry Airport.

Enhancements to the area’s digital connectivity, the establishment of skill academies, and the establishment of a Center for Industrial Digitization, Robotics, and Automation are more proposals.

The city deal ideas provide specific information on projects related to tourism, infrastructure, and urban rejuvenation.
