Three Motives for the Falcons to Remorse Signing Kirk Cousins
After acquiring Kirk Cousins, the best quarterback in the league, in free agency, the Atlanta Falcons emerged victorious.
Cousins is an excellent quarterback, no question about it, but is he the ideal answer? No. To be honest, before signing him, the Falcons and other teams should be aware of a number of warning signs.
The most important thing to remember is that Cousins will be 36 years old before the following season begins. Cousins is therefore not a solid long-term choice at center, even while he’s a nice option for a club seeking for a temporary boost. The Falcons probably belong more to the former group, but they still have to identify Cousins’ successor as soon as possible.
Second, and closely related to the first, is the fact that Cousins is recovering from a serious Achilles injury he sustained midway through the previous campaign. It should go without saying, but there’s always a danger when you bank all your chips on a quarterback who is nearing the end of his career and coming off a big injury (Jets, take note). Before his injury, Cousins was playing some of the greatest football of his career, but it’s unclear how he’ll fare going forward.
Lastly, even though Cousins has been a starter for almost ten years, he has only won one playoff game. Cousins’ lack of postseason success is undoubtedly concerning for a team like the Falcons, who are arguably just a quarterback away from contending. To be fair, though, he may have gained some supporters in Atlanta with his shock victory over the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs.
It won’t be long before we learn whether or not the $180 million, four-year contract is worthwhile. However, it’s pretty easy. Success is worthwhile. Anything else would be a waste of money.
