The No. 1 seed Tar Heels defeated No. 4 seed Pitt 72–65 on Friday night behind a game-high 25 points from RJ Davis. This victory set up a matchup between No. 10 seed NC State and the Tar Heels for the ACC Tournament championship at 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The ACC Player of the Year didn’t have his finest shooting performance. It did, however, have an impact on the UNC basketball annals.

The 22-year-old senior guard improved his season total of 3-pointers made to 102, just three short of the program record established by Justin Jackson during the 2016–17 UNC team’s run for the Tar Heels’ most recent NCAA championship. Jackson finished the game 3-for-10 from outside the arc.

It won’t be long until he owns the record and leaves Jackson’s legacy in the dust, barring injury or an un-Davis-like extreme cold streak. That could happen as soon as the Tar Heels take on the Wolfpack, giving them a chance to improve to a combined 5-0 this season against rivals NC State and Duke.

RJ Davis, meanwhile, became the seventh Tar Heel in history to reach the 2,000-point milestone after surpassing Larry Miller on the UNC program’s all-time scoring list with his effort against Pitt. With 2,000 points on the board, he may be one outing away from overtaking No. 6 Al Wood (2,015) and No. 7 Charlie Scott (2,007).

With 2,272 career points, fifth-year UNC basketball center Armando Bacot is presently ranked third on the record. With 19 points or more versus NC State, he may pass second-ranked Phil Ford (2,290).
