Rangers 1–2. Motherwell: Philippe Clement’s team misses opportunity to increase lead in Scottish Premiership
Match report: Theo Bair opened the score before Dan Casey scored an unexpected victory in the second half; it’s the first time Motherwell has triumphed at Ibrox since 1997. Rangers missed their opportunity to increase their advantage at the top to five points.
After suffering an unexpected 2-1 loss to Motherwell at home, Rangers were unable to solidify their hold on the top spot in the Scottish Premiership.
Motherwell won at Ibrox for the first time since 1997, scoring once in each half to give Celtic the upper hand in the league title chase. However, Brendan Rodgers’ team lost at Hearts the next day.
Early in the first half, Theo Bair put the Rangers ahead 1-0, stroking Jack Vale’s accurate pick-out past Jack Butland and then, around the hour mark, James Tavernier pulled one back for the home team.
After regaining parity, Philippe Clement’s team appeared to have a better chance of winning, but Blair Spittal’s incredible run in the 75th minute set up Dan Casey for an improbable winner.
Rangers had fiercely retaliated to defeat Kilmarnock 2-1 at Rugby Park on Wednesday, maintaining a crucial lead over the Hoops in a title contest that is expected to take many turns before it is decided in May.
It was generally accepted that the Steelmen would give up three more points.
