Sam Fariss, a staff writer at FanSided NCAA, puts together her ideal roster of former Tar Heel players. Who makes up UNC’s all-time NCAA Tournament team as we go toward March Madness?

The Tar Heels of North Carolina are the third-most successful men’s college basketball team in history. Sifting through the countless legends to determine which player was the best at each position was incredibly tough.

Chapel Hill has produced a great deal of talent, and numerous UNC athletes have left their mark on history.

Even without the starting lineup, the five best Heels players of all time could win a championship. My ideal North Carolina team would look like this:

Even though practically every player in this starting five was capable of playing in the paint, Sam Perkins’s numbers as the Heels’ center were astounding.

Through his four years in Chapel Hill, Perkins averaged 15.9 points per game, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.

He played behind all-time greats like Michael Jordan and James Worthy during his tenure with the Tar Heels, never becoming a starter. Perkins, though, earned his minutes and concluded his NCAA career with 1,000 minutes played. He also had double-doubles when he came off the bench.

Perkins, who is 6-foot-9, may not be the largest player in the paint, but his stature and skill with the ball make him an ideal center for UNC’s all-time starting lineup for the NCAA Tournament.
