Fading Monty Reunion? Rangers Postseason Hero Is Supposed To Be Near Red Sox DEa

With Cody Bellinger’s contract with the Chicago Cubs, agent Scott Boras may now be able to sign contracts with some of his other clients.

One in particular has an American League team interested: Jordan Montgomery, the former left-hander for the Texas Rangers.

It’s not the Rangers, though.

According to baseball analyst Peter Gammons, Boras and the Red Sox recently met and talks have advanced, suggesting that the Red Sox are concentrating on trying to sign Montgomery.

As per MLB.com, the Los Angeles Angels seem to be the Red Sox’s primary rival at the moment.

Before spring training started, Red Sox manager Alex Cora informed reporters in Fort Myers, Florida, that the team had a Zoom session with Montgomery.

The settlement of the 2024 rights fee dispute with Diamond Sports Group doesn’t seem to have made a difference in Montgomery’s desire to return for 2024.

The Cubs and Bellinger just agreed to a three-year, $80 million contract. The agreement is full of contingencies that might be activated after 2024, enabling Bellinger to investigate free agency once more. Montgomery might receive a comparable offer.

Three baseman Matt Chapman, designated hitter J.D. Martinez, and Cy Young winner Blake Snell are among the other Boras clients who are still unsigned.

Montgomery, who was 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA, 166 strikeouts, and 48 walks, is coming off of his best season overall. He was 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA in his time with the Rangers.

For the Rangers in the postseason, he was 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA, including a victory in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series coming out of the bullpen.
