The National League South team has participated in seven games so far this season.
George Elokobi, the manager of Maidstone United, is urging his squad to play with “mindfulness” when they take on Coventry City in the FA Cup fifth round. At Portman Road, the Stones shocked everyone by defeating Ipswich Town, who were vying for Championship promotion.
They were the first team outside of the top five divisions to reach this level since Blyth Spartans in 1978 after their victory in the most recent round continued their incredible run in the competition. This week, in advance of one of the most important games in their 32-year existence, the renowned FA Cup trophy paid a visit to their training facility.
Elokobi, who played professionally for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Colchester United, has led the National League South team through seven games with just three goals conceded. The difference between the Stones and Championship team Coventry City is ninety-five positions.
“I know it’s here but we haven’t won it and it’s important they can take photos with it but we have to be mindful,” the 38-year-old stated, emphasising how crucial it is to keep his team grounded.
“Mark Robins has a great team that we have to play against in Coventry. Remember that they almost made it to the Premier League the previous season?
“Yes, it’s good to have this in our surroundings, but we also need to make sure that it doesn’t encourage us to run.”
“We have to prepare for what is going to be a historic occasion for our football club.”
Elokobi barely made it as far as the FA Cup fourth round during his playing career, losing to teams like Stoke City and Crystal Palace. He quipped, holding the renowned trophy close to his body: “It’s the closest I’ve got to it.”
“My expression brightened. The fact that we were able to bring the trophy here is testament to the calibre of work our guys have done.”
