An alleged racist gesture was captured on camera by a Middlesbrough away end supporter against Leicester.
An alleged racist incident during Leicester’s Sky Bet Championship match against Middlesbrough at King Power Stadium on Saturday has prompted Leicestershire Police to launch an inquiry.
Over the weekend, a video appeared on social media that appeared to show a Middlesbrough supporter making a racist gesture during the team’s away match against Leicester. Leicestershire Police have opened an investigation into the incident, and Middlesbrough stated on Sunday that they will take the “strongest action possible” against anyone found to have breached its anti-discrimination policy.
A Leicestershire Police spokesperson told the PA news agency, “The force is aware of a video posted online in which a racist gesture is allegedly made.” The altercation captured on camera happened on Saturday, February 17, at King Power Stadium between Middlesbrough and Leicester City. As part of ongoing investigations, officers are collaborating with colleagues from Cleveland Police and both clubs.
“Middlesbrough Football Club is aware of an incident which took place during yesterday’s game at Leicester City,” the statement from the Boro on Sunday stated. In order to identify the person or people responsible, we are looking into this and collaborating with the appropriate authorities.
“We will take the most severe measures to combat racism and all other forms of discriminatory behavior. We have a zero-tolerance policy in place. As an inclusive football team, everyone is welcome and should feel safe.”
