The Cardinals’ need to improve their interior defensive line is well known.
It seems unlikely, but not impossible, that the Arizona Cardinals will sign a top free agent this summer. General manager Monti Ossenfort might even need to overpay for one or two players, as there is a genuine chance. It makes no difference, though, because the Cardinals must make adjustments on both sides of the ball regardless of the circumstances. The Cardinals need to get better on the defensive line, depending on which side they should be concentrating on more.
The defensive-minded head coach Jonathan Gannon will have to demonstrate in his second season that he can assemble a successful defence. Defender Grover Stewart of the Indianapolis Colts is one unrestricted free agent that might assist him in solidifying a true run-stop.
Stewart, who is 6’4″, has the physical presence to hold his own against an offensive lineman in both rush and pass situations. He had a disappointing season with the Colts, missing six games, totaling just 41 tackles and just half a sack.
Stewart was a formidable member of the Colts’ defensive line in 2021 and 2022. During those two seasons, he participated in all 34 games and recorded five passes batted, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, five sacks, and 116 total tackles.
The Cardinals allowed 143 rushing yards per game the previous season and managed just 33 quarterback sacks. At the very least, adding Stewart would block the middle of the defensive line. He is the kind of player who may be double teamed, allowing an opponent to break free and initiate play. The Cardinals’ run defence may get better just by making an impact like that.
Stewart will be entering the free agency market for the first time in his professional life, and Ossenfort would be wise to sign him in order to incorporate him into Gannon’s defensive scheme.
